Message From The President

A handful of us from the coffee community came together in 1999 with one idea: show the world what Indian coffee could be. None of us knew what we were starting. Two decades on, that idea has grown into the Specialty Coffee Association of India, a community built by the people who live this work, from growers tending the soil to the roasters, baristas, and entrepreneurs who bring it to the cup.

The coffee world looks different than it did five years ago. There’s talk of a “fourth wave,” and India’s coffee story is finally breaking free of being just a commodity line item. Quality and experience matter now in a way they didn’t before, and to me, that’s an opening, not a challenge. It’s why we’ve pushed to bring more roasters, café owners, and industry voices into SCAI, not just growers. The people building what’s next belong in the room.

If you ask me what SCAI is for, it’s this: helping members learn from each other, sharpen their craft, and stay honest about where this coffee comes from and who grew it. I want India to be a place people in coffee seek out, not an afterthought on a list of origins.

Two things I’m proud of: our work adapting global training and standards into something useful here, and the number of women moving into roles this industry once kept closed, running estates, buying green coffee, roasting, building supply chains. That shift is real, and I want SCAI to keep making room for it.

To everyone in this, growers, roasters, baristas, and anyone who loves a good cup: thank you. There’s more to do, and I’m glad to be doing it alongside you.
